Democrat-Deval Patrick / Tim Murray (incumbent)

Deval Patrick grew up in the South Side of Chicago, and with the help of the A Better Chance program, attended Milton Academy in Milton, MA. He then attended Harvard College, concentrating in English and American Literature. He spent a year in Africa working with the United Nations, afterwards attending Harvard School of Law. During law school, Patrick was elected president of the Legal Aid Bureau and worked as a law clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals upon graduating. He became an attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and later for the Boston law firm Hill and Barlow. In 1994, President Clinton nominated him as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. As a part of the private sector, Patrick has worked for Texaco, Coca-Cola, United Airlines, and Ameriquest. In 2006 he became the second elected African-American state governor in United States history. He now lives in Milton with his wife Diane, with whom he has two adult daughters.

Tim Murray grew up in Worcester and attended the St. John’s School in Shrewsbury. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Fordham University and took night classes to earn his law degree from the New England College School of Law in Springfield while working as a substitute teacher and as an advocate for homeless families. He became partner at the Worcester law firm of Tattan, Leonard and Murray. In 1997, Murray was elected to Worcester City Council and as Mayor of Worcester in 2001. He served for three terms, during which he chaired the School Committee. He has served as a part of many community organizations in Worcester and lives there with his wife Tammy and their two daughters.

Stance on the Issues:

Priorities: Education, job creation and economic growth, and the development of strong, safe communities in Massachusetts.

Opposes the death penalty

Supports casinos in Massachusetts

Illegal Immigration- Patrick believes in the necessity for increased enforcement of employment laws, but does not believe in discrimination based upon immigration status when it comes to public, state services.
