Martha Coakley graduated from Williams College in 1975 and got a J.D. degree from the Boston University School of Law in 1979. Since then, she has been practicing in various arenas. She was initially involved in civil litigation in the Boston firms Parker, Coulter, Daley & White and Goodwin Procter LLP. In 1986, she joined the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office as Assistant District Attorney in the Lowell District Courts office and later as the Chief of the Child Abuse Protection Unit with a stint as a Special Attorney for the Boston Organized Crime Strike Force. In 1998, Coakley was elected Middlesex County District Attorney, a position in which she established the office’s Adult Sexual Assault Division and in which she continued for eight years until her election as Massachusetts Attorney General. Over the years, she has been involved in numerous community and professional organizations and boards and has received many awards. She lives in Medford, MA with her husband and two dogs.
