Role of the Treasurer and Receiver General

The Treasurer and Receiver General is the custodian of all state funds and is the only party authorized to make payment from those funds. All state agencies must report their finances to the Treasurer. The Treasurer is also the Chair of the State Board of Retirement.

Democrat-Steve Grossman

Steve Grossman is the Chairman of Grossman Marketing Group in Somerville, where he is the third generation to lead the business. After attending Princeton and Harvard Business School and serving in the military, he joined the family business and became its president in 1975. Grossman has changed the company, entering new markets and implementing environmentally sustainable business practices. Grossman is involved with various community organizations and through them is dedicated to helping the lower and middle classes and promoting interreligious and interracial connections. Over the years, he has been very involved in Democratic Party politics. Grossman was elected the chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Party in 1991, was part of the presidential campaigns of both Michael Dukakis and Bill Clinton, who later asked him to chair the Democratic National Committee, and ran for governor of Massachusetts in 2002. He and his wife Barbara have three sons, two of whom are executives at Grossman Marketing Group.

Financial Strategies:

Keep businesses in-state, specifically with the help of the state’s Economically Targeted Investment (ETI) Program.
Increase financial literacy by utilizing technology to provide information and education and by working with non-profit/community organizations to provide financial literacy tools to the people.
Invest in education, especially high schools and community colleges, to provide adequate education and skills training to develop a valuable, strong workforce.
Maintain state lottery revenues and support casinos in Massachusetts.
Promote transparency in the pension system and reform it by implementing a cap, raising the retirement age, increasing the years of salary used to calculate pension, and limiting “spiking” (pay raises at the end of one’s career intended to boost one’s pension).
Support the “Say on Pay” bill which puts a check on corporate operations and executive pay.

Republican-Karyn Polito

Karyn Polito graduated from Boston College with a degree from their School of Management and got a J.D. from New England School of Law. She has served on the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen and on the State Lottery Commission. Polito has been a State Representative for the 11^th District since 2000 and serves on the Ways and Means Committee. She has lives with her husband and two children in Shrewsbury, where she has lived her whole life and is very involved with the community, both local and regional.

Financial Strategies:

Promote transparency and dedication to ethical dealings in the State Treasury and state government in general.
Adopt policies that attract businesses and create jobs.
Support expanded gaming in Massachusetts.
Change the investment strategy of pension funds to seek the maximum rate of return.
Remove politics from the pension system by not allowing newly-elected state officials to receive state pensions.
